About termites:
Like ants termites are also social insects that eat wood. Basically there are two types of termites, those that live entirely in wood, and those that can tunnel into the ground. Of them the wood-inhabiting termites are the more primitive ones. The colonies of these wood- inhabiting termites consist of excavated galleries inside dead branches or logs. As the dead wood is consumed the colony dies. Since single pieces of dead wood can not sustain a very large family, their colonies rarely ever number more than a few thousand termites. The worker class comprises of the older nymphs who have undergone, a regressive molt and that temporarily stay in the nest galleries and help their parents to raise more brothers and sisters. Then there are the soldiers; those termites that have developed enlarged orange heads and long toothed jaws. The main purpose of the soldier is to defend the colony from termite's mortal enemies, the ants. Many of the nymphs are found to gradually grow wing pads and then transform into winged termites called alates. These alates fly from the colony at a certain time of the year to start new colonies.
Termite infestation and use of termiticides:
The first important step that goes towards termite control and prevention is detection. It is necessary for every house owner to detect and recognize the signs of a termite infestation. The presence of winged termites or the alates is one such possible sign of termite invasion. Mostly these alates are found to swarm during when temperature and moisture conditions are favorable, usually on warm days following rainfall. No sooner after the swarming the alates shed their wings. These wings can be found in windowsills, cobwebs or on other surfaces inside a house and may be the only evidence of a swarming that was carried indoors. One can also assume that this is a warning of a possible termite infestation inside a house. One of the most easiest and conventional methods of tackling with the termite infestation problem is through the use of termiticides. Termiticides are available either in liquids or in liquid form. Many of these products are applied before construction to the trenches around slabs and piers. Many a time a soil application prior to the construction is also recommended to prevent future infestations.
