Rodenticides for rodent control

Controlling rodents is ongoing. Successful programs start before you have a problem. Look for your problem areas outside your buildings. These areas may include dumpsters, standing water, creeks, streams, neighboring businesses, and drainage systems. The most common attractant around the average home include either pet food or bird seed. The smell from items is so strong it will attract several types of animals to your yard. Once they get a taste of these nutritious foods they will try to feed there daily. If you suspect you have rodent activity around pet food or bird seed, do not remove the food until the animal has been successfully trapped.

Rodenticide classification

Rodenticides are generally administered in poisoned food baits, liquids, or dusts. Rodenticides can be characterized as either slow or fast acting. The later also called as acute rodenticides; often kill with a single dose. Slow acting Rodenticide is preferred in most of the cases for superior efficacy and safety.

Application

Most rodenticides are mixed into the solid food bait, although some are applies as liquid or as contact poisons. A good quality cereal is normally used as the base material inn food baits. A colored dye is incorporated to alert against accidental human consumption or feed backing to live stock or non-target animals. Human tastes deterrents are also used to discourage accidental human consumption. A variety of attractants, addictives and preservatives may be added to make preparation easier or to improve efficacy.

Planning control strategies

The need for active rodent control should be evaluated in light of available resources and current risks. Rat control strategies can be broadly based on an initial survey, followed by application of control methods and maintenance of control and hygiene practices. The survey defines the severity and scope of the infestation.

Safety precautions

All rodenticides are highly toxic and represent a considerable danger to humans and non-target animals, including pets, livestock, and wildlife. The benefits of rodenticides application must be weighed against potential adverse effects. Only the adequate trained persons should use the poisons.
