The most important areas while inspecting for mold and moisture intrusion problems are the basement, bathroom and roof of any house. It is easier to undertake mold prevention measures than to get involved in the hassles surrounding its removal and paying for the damages mold can cause, if it goes un-checked.

The roof needs to be carefully removed of any debris build-up in valleys and at wall-to-roof intersections. When removing debris, it must be ensured that it does not enter and clog downspouts. Attics are notorious for mold build-ups and homeowners need to be vigilant for water stains on the underside of the roof, rusted nails and discolored mildewed sections on any surface. If there are any of these moisture-warning signs, the source of the moisture needs to be located and fixed. The vents may need to be checked at the eaves to see if they are unobstructed by insulation and that there is room for air to flow from the eaves. For proper ventilation, it is a good idea to install timers on bathroom and laundry fans and run them for 20 minutes after showers. Bath, kitchen and laundry fan ducts need vent outside with dryers to the outside of the home. More serious moisture damage or standing water in either the crawlspace or basement may call for professional help and a certified contractor to repair, correct any structural problems and eliminate the source of the moisture may be the best solution.
