Roof Insulation

Roof insulation is important for homes that require protection from humidity and extreme temperature conditions. Weather resistance is the most important feature offered by most roof insulation products available with insulation contractors and suppliers.

Materials used in roof insulation

Most roof insulation materials are made from synthetic mineral fibers. Asbestos was earlier used in most roof insulations. However, other materials have now taken the place of asbestos which is no longer used. These materials may include rock wool, glass wool, sheep wool, cellulose and polyester. Foam insulation is also used on the underside of the roof. Generally available in batt, blanket or loose-fill form, roof insulation may be carried out from the outside or may be installed from the inside of the house.

Process of roof insulation

The homeowner and the insulation contractor would decide if the roof insulation would be on the exterior of the house which could involve the use of reflective foil or would be done on the underside of the roof in the interior of the house. It is important to keep in mind that electrical wiring, vents and other important fixtures may create obstacles in roof insulation. Spray foam insulation may be a solution to this kind of a problem. Some kind of spray insulations are applied to the underside of the roof. They bind the tiles and slates to form a weatherproof barrier that prevents rain, wind, snow and dust.

Some important precautions for roof insulation projects

Roof insulation involves chemical and other forms of insulation materials that may proved to be harmful to the skin or the general health of the people while it is being installed. It is recommended that the people not involved in the actual process keep away from the work area and the contractors or engineers hired to do the job are well-equipped with masks, gloves and appropriate clothing. The area should be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner to remove surface dust. At the same time, it is important that the house have proper ventilation in place for maintaining air quality in the house. Also, the quality of insulation should be of superior level. Any inferior quality of loose-fill may fall down through exhaust fans, ceiling vents and even light fittings.
