Attic Insulation
Steps before attic insulation Before an attic insulation project is undertaken, one must check for possible airflow from the attic into the home. All openings must be covered and ducts must be lead outside. Chimneys must have sealants around them and the tops of the interior walls should also be sealed. If there are any stain or watermarks in the attic, the probable cause for water leaks must be fixed. Besides insulating the attic, the attic access must also be insulated air sealed. Precautions to be considered for attic insulation If there is any existing insulation in the attic, avoid disturbing the same. Loose-fill insulation can create gaps if moved about leading to air leakage. Also all forms of insulation must be kept at a reasonable and safe distance from chimneys and gas flue pipes. Insulation must also be kept away from recessed light fixtures, ceiling fans or ventilation fans. Since the attic is mostly a closed area, adequate ventilation must be provided. It is recommended that attic vents should not be covered and that a safe distance should be maintained between the insulation and the roof to allow for smooth airflow. Safety measures for attic insulation Using fiberglass for attic insulation is a safer option if attic insulation is carried out as a do-it-yourself project. However in case of other insulation techniques, it is highly recommended that the handyman or professional be equipped with gloves, goggles, dust masks or respirators, shirts with long sleeves and long pants.
