Window efficiency during summer

Keeping the home cool on sweltering summer days can be challenging. But with some low-tech, easy adjustments, one can make a reasonable impact on cooling bill. Closing curtains during the day and using ceiling and other fans to keep air circulation going can help get started to keep house cool.

Increase comfortable level at home with window
Install white window shades or mini-blinds. These can help eliminate 40 to 50 per cent of the house's heat gain from the sun. Close the blinds. Close south and west-facing curtains on windows that get direct sunlight. Reduce any unnecessary heat generated from appliances. Air-dry dishes instead of using the dishwasher's drying cycle and hang clothes to dry on an outdoor line rather than use the dryer. Avoid landscaping with lots of rock that are near to window and uncovered too, cement or asphalt. These hard landscaping materials on the south or west sides of the home increase the temperature by giving off heat after the sun has set. Use plants, trees and vines for advantage. Plant deciduous trees on the south and west sides of the house and keep the windows open after sun set. It brings cool air inside the house. This will help keep the house cool in summer by blocking direct sunlight and warm in winter by allowing the sun through. Plants or vines grown on trellises can also help shade windows or sides of the house from direct sunlight.
More tips for windows
Complete tasks that generate heat like cooking, laundry in the early morning or evening to prevent unnecessarily warming the temperature of the house during the hottest times of the day. Open windows during cooler periods of the day like early morning and late evening to allow cool outdoor air to naturally lower the house temperature. Weather strip doors and windows can also help in summers. While weather stripping helps keep the house warm in winter, it also helps things cool in the summer by preventing warm outside air from entering the house. The damper for the fireplace should be tightly closed so warm air outside has less opportunity to enter the house. Try to upgrade the windows, look for the new double-paned windows with spectrally selective coating.
