Compost Fence

Local and municipal authorities usually object to open compost piles on health grounds. In these instances of local health regulations opposing compost heaps, the gardener can opt for a Compost Fence to hold the compost heap. Compost Fences require meager investment and effort. Enclosing your compost pile in a compost fence allows it to remain compact while encouraging faster composting because the outer portion of the pile acts as an insulator to allow higher temperature generation in the center.

Simple and Economical Compost Fences:

Readymade Compost Fences are available commercially and may be purchased. Alternatively, you can construct a simple economical Woven Wire Compost Fence. Various types of woven wire are available - from reinforcing wire to fencing wire. Heavy gauge wire that is self-supporting is preferable. However finer wire supported by rods or fence posts can be used. Lining the fence with a layer of black plastic will speed up decomposition.

How to construct a fence

To construct a simple Compost Fence, you require wire fencing or snow fence. Multiply the diameter you want by 3.14 to determine the length of fence required. Fasten with wire or 3 or 4 chain snaps or clips, available at any hardware store, to make a circle. Your home-made compost fence is ready. When you need to turn the pile, strip the fence away and set it up in the vicinity. Turn the compost into the structure in its new location.

For a Snow Fence bin, buy the appropriate length of prefabricated snow fencing or chicken wire to make an inexpensive fence. Fasten two-by-fours as corner posts to the bottom to form a circle. Now simply set up this circle, tying it with metal wire. Your Snow Fence Bin is ready for use.
The sole caveat in constructing a Wire or Snow Fence Bin is that the optimum size should be no smaller than three feet in diameter. But this can vary according to your personal requirements.

Compost fences are an inexpensive and popular option in compost making. Making a Compost Fence at home is child's play. Compost Fences require minimal investment and labor in converting your garden and household waste into rich humus.
